Testimonios sobre la vida de Juan Pereira Varela (Juanín) quien fue muerto el 17 de diciembre de 1961 en la costa norte de Pinar del Río, Cuba. Juanín estudió en el Colegio Baldor —allí fue campeón de natación— y luego en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de La Habana. De pensamiento cristiano formó parte de la Agrupación Católica Universitaria (ACU). Cuando en Cuba el castrismo acabó con la libertad Juanín comenzó a luchar en el Directorio Revolucionario Estudiantil (DRE). Después del desastre de Playa Girón fue nombrado Secretario General del DRE y cumplió con todas sus responsabilidades. Fue a Pinar del Río a esperar un grupo que se infiltraba y allí fue asesinado por la fuerza represiva del régimen totalitario. Su vida, contada en este libro, fue ejemplar hasta el martirio, un ejemplo para los jóvenes inquietos por hacer algo por los demás. Incluye datos biográficos de los que escriben en el libro. Con fotos en blanco y negro de Juanín. Homenaje de sus amigos a los 50 años de su muerte.
This is a book of testimonials on the life of Juan Pereira Varela (Juanin) who was killed on December 17, 1961, on the coast of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. Juanin studied at Baldor School where he was a champion swimmer. He later went on to study architecture at the University of Havana. A man of deep Christian faith, he was a member of the Agrupacion Catolica Universitaria (Catholic University Coalition). When Castro destroyed Cuba’s freedom, Juanin began his participation in the Directorio Revolucionario Estudiantil (Student Revolutionary Directorate). After the failure of the Bay of Pigs, he was named Secretary General of this organization where he met all his responsibilities. He journeyed to Pinar del Rio to meet a group of friends who were infiltrating and was killed by Castro’s totalitarian regime. His life, told in this book, was exemplary right until his martyrdom- an example for all youth wanting to better their society. The book includes black and white photos of Juanin as well as biographical data about those giving the testimonials. It is a beautiful tribute to this special person on the 50th anniversary of his death.
